What is Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride/Menthol and what is it used for?

  • Diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol is a cough suppressant that is also a decongestant.
  • Diphenhydramine hydrochloride works by blocking histamine 1 receptor sites, thus temporarily causing pain relief and reducing cough.
  • Ammonium chloride also acts as a decongestant and helps reduce the viscosity of mucus.
  • Menthol has a topical analgesic effect that helps reduce coughing.
  • Therefore, this medicine is used to relieve cough and congestion during colds or allergies.

Do not take diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol:

  • If you are allergic to diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor about allergies and any signs you have.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the past two weeks.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 6 years of age.

Warnings and precautions:

  • Stop taking the medicine immediately and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, and dizziness.
  • Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you have any of the following health problems: asthma or other chronic respiratory problems, glaucoma (increased eye pressure), benign prostatic hyperplasia, difficulty urinating, or liver problems.
  • Taking alcohol with this medication may increase side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness, so be sure to avoid drinking alcohol with this medication.

Possible side effects:

  • Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and difficulty urinating.

Other medications and diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol:

  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal products, vitamins, and supplements.
  • If you are taking or have recently taken MAO inhibitors within the past two weeks.
  • If you are taking antiepileptic drugs (such as carbamazepine) used to treat seizures.
  • If you are taking tricyclic antidepressants (a type of medication primarily used to treat depression).
  • If you are taking anxiolytics or sedatives (such as benzodiazepines).
  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you are not sure if a medicine you are taking is listed above.
  • Keep a list of the medications you take and take it with you to visits to your healthcare provider.

Make sure you do not start new medications without talking to your healthcare provider first.

How to take diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol:

Adults:

  • Take 5-10 ml 4 times daily.

Children 1-6 years:

  • The recommended dose is 2.5 ml 4 times daily.

Children 6-12 years:

  • The recommended dose is 5 ml 4 times daily.
  • Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • This medicine is for oral use only.

How to store diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol:

  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children and pets.
  • Store diphenhydramine hydrochloride/menthol at or below 25°C.
  • Do not use the medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton.
  • Keep the medicine in its original package (tightly closed) to protect it from moisture and light.
  • Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
